Popeyes Releases New Chicken Sandwich to Compete With Chick-Fil-A’s


The national chicken sandwich, which also goes by Chicken Chick, is not just a fried chicken concoction; it has been served with a creamy “rice” and with extra veggies and a fried egg on a crispbread bun.

The chicken sandwich, made with a base of cornmeal and all the spices and flavors, is sold for about $8 (including $2.79 in taxes).

The sandwich is available nationwide and comes in chicken or meat.

The chicken sandwich was popular enough to produce more than 1 million sandwiches in two years from about a dozen restaurants that didn’t plan on selling it in the first place.

“We’re seeing it grow significantly here, which is very intriguing for us and for them,” said Chip Smith, chief executive of Chipotle Mexican Grill Restaurants.

“They’re getting good results. And that’s a good thing to have across the country.”

Smith said people in the Northeast, California and Florida were the biggest customers. That could mean big crowds in those markets in the coming months and years. In recent years, the number of people in the Dallas area who ordered this kind of chicken sandwich grew almost 30 percent, he said.
